For centuries on end, herbalists in Tibet and Mongolia have suggested little red berries called ‘Goji’ as a cure for those enduring from an assortment of troubles. As a matter of fact, the people of Tibet and Mongolia have a two-week yearly festival in honor of the goji berry. Many of them have dubbed the goji berry “happy berry” because in primary folklore “to consume goji in the morning will lead to grins all day”.

Organic Goji Berry - True Wonder of the Mother Nature

Health food supplement manufacturers in recent years have found in Goji berry as a new anchor by which to promote their enterprising bent. This plant and its fruit is known by many names. In China, it is known as wolfberry. In India, it is called murali. It may also be referred to as Western snowberry, barbary matrimony vine, mede berry, red medlar, bocksdorn and, Duke of Argyll’s tea tree. In scientific nomenclature, Goji berry comes in simpler, with only two closely related species, Lycium barbarum and L. chinense. Although this plant could be found in southeastern Europe and Asia, the Goji berry which health food manufacturers are those of Himalayan or Tibetan origins, perhaps to build up an image for a newly found and exotic plant that would help titillate the imagination of consumers.

What are Goji Berries?

Goji berries are orange red colored fruits, produced by the plant Lycium Barbarum which is an evergreen shrub found in China, Mongolia and in the Himalayas in Tibet. They are part of the nightshade (Solonaceae) family and are also known as Wolfberry, Lycium Fruit, Tibetan Goji Berry and Duke of Argyll’s Tea Tree.

Goji berries have a mild tangy taste which is slightly sweet and sour and have been likened to a savoury cranberry. In their dried form, they are similar to raisins in shape and texture.
