Aronia Berries - True Health Benefits or Just Hype?

The Aronia berry, also referred to as a chokeberry is gaining popularity as being a natural healer of many ailments. The fruit is native to the United States, and was used by Native Americans for a variety of tasks, including medicinal purposes. Many scientific studies have been recently conducted on the benefits of this berry to determine exactly what it can treat and how effective it is for certain conditions.

It is possible that the Aronia berries contain the largest amount of antioxidants than any other fruit. These work with our immune system to keep it strong and able to fight off diseases. Its ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is almost 80 units, which is much higher than the elderberry, the next in line with just 60 units. Aronia Berry: One of the True Super foods

If you have berry bushes in your backyard that you’ve never explored, it is a good idea to start exploring them now: you may have a wealth of health sitting there now. The Aronia berry is a small purple berry that is edible and most people refer to them as chokeberries.

These are extremely sour berries, so you must add sugar to them to make the sweet. Many Native American tribes use them in jellies and jams for their nutritional value. Many farmers markets also sell chokeberry jam.


Aronia berries are fairly new on the market for health concerns because they are so sour and many people think they are poisonous. If you live in the Midwest you probably have a bush out in your backyard because they are often seen as ornamental.

Ways to Consume Aronia Berries

Of the many different types of berries, aronia berries are one of the largest types to be turned into other foods because of their sour taste. Instead of eating them right off the bush, most people will turn them into wine, salsa, tea, syrup and baked goods in order to reap the benefits of their health benefits. Although these berries disappeared in popularity for several years they have come back because of their many health benefits.

As you go through your grocery shelves you will be surprised at all the different types of foods that contain these berries.

Health Benefits of Aronia Berries

These berries are one of the nutrition berries that contain Folic Acid, vitamins B2 and B6, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. These vitamins come together to help in many health conditions. According to an article in Science Daily, the purple berries like currants or aronia berries have a 50% higher content of antioxidants than some of the other types of berries.

Antioxidants are said to help to protect the body from cancer and the University of Maryland has researched this to find that berries may help in colon cancer. These berries also are said to decrease cholesterol, guard against heart disease and aid in digestion and fight viruses and colds. Some Native American tribes also used it as an aphrodisiac.

Aronia berries are a fairly new berry to the United States, but people in Europe have used them for many years. In Iowa and Scotland, farmers are growing larger crops of these berries to meet the demands of this new super food.
